Inline Editing

Edit fields inline from Issue Matrix

Inline editing lets you quickly update issues from the Issue Matrix panel. With this feature, you can perform immediate changes to issues shown in an Issue Matrix without leaving the current issue page.

You can change several custom fields of different issues from a single place without navigating each issue separately. You can also transition an issue from one state to another by editing its status inline from the Issue Matrix panel.

Inline editing is supported for all the Issue Matrix types: Sub-task, Issue Links, Epic, Filter, and Custom JQL.

The fields you can edit inline are:

  • Summary

  • Assignee

  • Status

  • Story Point Estimate

  • Number-type custom fields

  • Estimate-type custom fields

  • Date-type custom fields

  • Datetime-type custom fields

We're working on gradually adding more fields to that list.

How it works

Inline editing prerequisites

To be able to edit issue fields inline in an Issue Matrix panel:

  • The user needs to have Issue editing and assigning permissions for the particular project.

  • The fields you want to edit should be added to the specific edit screen. Fields can be edited inline only when added to the edit screen.

  • For the estimate-type fields like Time Spent, Remaining Estimate, Original Estimate, etc., the Timetracking field has to be added to the given edit screen.
Visit Atlassian’s Configure time tracking article for more details.

You can learn more about Jira Cloud’s permissions and permission schemes in Atlassian’s Permissions for company-managed projects and Team-managed permissions documents.

To edit fields of issues within an Issue Matrix panel:

  1. Hover over a field you want to edit in an Issue Matrix.

  2. Once the pencil icon appears, click the field and start making changes.

  3. You can also cancel any wanted modification using the x button.
