Create issues/issue links via Issue Matrix

Issues are the building blocks of every project in Jira. An issue can be a story, epic, bug, feature to be built, or any other task in your project. Quick actions available in Issue Matrix panels allow you to easily create issues or issue links in a current issue from your project.

Depending on the Matrix type, you can use three quick-add actions: create sub-taskscreate issues in еpics, and create issue links.

Use the “+” button in the Issue Matrix panel to create issues/issue links. The button will be visible only if you have the necessary permissions and issue types configured. You can find more information about the required configuration for each Matrix type in the sections below.

Create sub-tasks

For Sub-tasks Matrix, you can create sub-tasks of the current issue directly from the panel using the “+” button. The new sub-tasks will be added to the Issue Matrix panel right away.

Quick action fails with required fields

The quick action for creating subtasks in Sub-task matrices fails when there are required custom fields. The failure happens specifically if other custom fields besides the Summary field are set as required for the subtask creation.

The reason for the failure comes from Jira’s backend technologies. There’s already an issue logged in Atlassian’s Ecosystem Jira to fix the problem: ACJIRA-1487: Create Sub Task issue dialogGathering Impact .

Take a look at the issue and vote if you wish to elevate its priority.

The + button will be visible if the sub-tasks types are enabled in Jira’s configuration (review Jira’s documentation). Also, make sure to have sub-task issue types in your projects. Otherwise, the “+ “button won’t be visible in Sub-task Matrices in your project.

Matrix not visible

The whole matrix panel won’t be shown if the sub-tasks are disabled on your Jira Cloud site.

Create issues in epics

For Еpic Matrices, you can create issues in the current epic directly from the panel using the “+” button. The issues added can be stories, epics, bugs, or any other tasks in your projects. The new issue will be added to the Issue Matrix panel right away.

For epics, the users must be granted Create issue permissions, and your project should have sub-task issue types. Otherwise, the “+” button won’t be visible in the Epic Matrices in your project.

Quick action behavior with required fields

The quick action for creating issues in Epic opens Jira’s native dialog for creating an issue in some cases with required custom fields. You’ll face this behavior if other custom fields besides the Summary field are set as required for the issue creation.

Create issue links

When you have an Issue Links Matrix, you can easily link issues to the current one using the Matrix panel’s quick-add (+) button. The new link will be added to the Issue Matrix panel right away.

The Issue Matrix users should have issue-linking permissions. The Issue Linking should be enabled in Jira Cloud’s configuration (check how to enable it in Jira Cloud’s documentation). Otherwise, the whole issue linking the matrix won’t be visible.

Delete sub-tasks and issue links

In Sub-task or Issue Links Issue Matrices, you can delete sub-tasks and issue links directly without leaving the current issue view.

To run the delete action, navigate to a chosen sub-task or issue link in the Issue Matrix panel and click the x button next to it. Then, confirm, and the sub-task or the issue link will be gone.
