Preview matrix panels during configuration

The Preview feature lets you see how the Issue Matrix panel will appear in the issue view screen of a specific issue. It also helps identify reasons why the panel doesn’t appear in the issue. Simply enter or choose an issue key in the Preview section when configuring the matrix, and you'll be able to view the panel with its columns and information. This feature helps get early feedback on your Issue Matrix panel design.

How to Preview an Issue Matrix?

To preview a new or an existing Issue Matrix, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Project settings or Project settings > Apps for team-managed projects.

  2. From the left menu, choose Issue Matrix Configuration.

  3. If you are creating a new matrix, click the Add Matrix button on the Issue Matrices page and select a type from the dropdown. To preview an existing matrix, click the Edit button (pencil icon) in the Actions column of the Issue Matrices list.

  4. Configure the Issue Matrix context, type, columns, and other options you want.

  5. Click the Preview button in the bottom left corner and enter or choose an issue key.

  6. Check the preview area to see the Issue Matrix panel.

Automatic Preview updates
Any change you make to the configuration will update the opened preview in real-time.

Empty Issue Matrix Preview

When there are no issues that match the criteria in the matrix configuration, the Issue Matrix preview will display a matrix panel with empty columns and a “No issues available” message.

Take a look at the screenshot below to see what the empty preview looks like.

Configuration Problems Detected by the Preview

If you can't see a preview of the Issue Matrix for a selected issue, there may be a problem with the configuration. The preview will display a message describing the issue and how to fix it.
The unavailable preview is also an indication that the Issue Matrix will not be shown in the issue view of the selected issue.

Here are the most common reasons why the preview isn’t available and what you can do to fix them:

  • Issue wasn’t found: This message appears when you enter a wrong issue key or when you don’t have permission to view the issue.

  • Matrix isn’t linked to the issue’s project: This message appears when the project of the selected issue isn’t linked to the Issue Matrix. Add the project to the matrix configuration in Context > Linked Projects.

  • Issue Matrix is disabled: If you see this message, make sure the Enable Matrix toggle in the top right corner of the page is turned on.

  • The matrix has no columns: If you see this message, make sure at least one column is added in Data > Columns.

  • Issue type isn’t configured for the matrix: This message appears when the issue type of the selected issue is not added to the matrix configuration in Context > Issue Types.

  • Issue linking is disabled: Only applicable to Issue Links Matrices. This message appears If issue linking is disabled for your Jira site. Admins can enable issue linking by going to Jira’s Settings > Issues > Issue linking.

  • Sub-tasks are disabled: Only applicable to Sub-task Matrices. This message appears If sub-task issue types are disabled for your Jira site. Admins can enable sub-tasks by going to Jira’s Settings > Issues > Sub-tasks.

  • Epic issue type is required: This message only applies to Epic Matrices when selecting an issue type that isn't Epic.
