Create Snapshot Configuration Elements

Introduction

During deployment, you can safely rename configuration elements coming from the snapshot. This way, you will make sure that they will be added as new elements to the target system instead of modifying the target elements they match.

Supported Objects

List of configuration objects that can be renamed in Configuration Manager (as of CMJ 6.4.1):

  • Workflows and workflow schemes

  • Permission schemes

  • Issue types, issue type schemes, issue type screen schemes, and issue link types

  • Custom fields, field screens, field screen schemes, field configurations, field configuration schemes 

  • Notification schemes

  • Issue security schemes

  • Statuses

  • Resolutions

  • Events

  • Project categories

  • Agile boards

  • Dashboards

  • Filters

  • Priorities and priority schemes

How it works

On the deployment wizard's Analyze step, in the list with planned changes, you will see the option

next to some configuration elements. Clicking on this option opens a dialog for you, which allows
you to provide a new name for this configuration element. This way, the configuration element from the snapshot will be created as a new element on the target Jira.

To rename configuration elements in Configuration Manager:

  1. Start a configuration snapshot deployment.

  2. On the Analyze step, navigate to the Workflows tab, for example.

  3. Choose a modification to a workflow/workflow scheme.

  4. Click the →A option and enter a new name for the configuration element.

  5. Enter a new name and click the check mark to confirm.

  6. Click the Analyze button.

     

As a result, Configuration Manager will reanalyze the configuration to reflect the modifications made by you and will update the Analyze Configuration Changes page with the new information.

The new configuration element is now displayed as an element that will be added to the target.

If a configuration element has references to other configuration elements, after the rename, the references will be updated with the new name. For example, if you choose to rename a workflow, the new workflow will be added to a scheme.

Default Schemes

With Configuration Manager, you can also selectively apply modifications to default schemes. If you would like to preserve a target default scheme unchanged, you can rename the default scheme from the snapshot and create it as a non-default scheme on the target Jira instance.

To deploy a default scheme as a non-default scheme:

  1. Start a configuration snapshot deployment.

  2. On the Analyze step, navigate to the Workflows tab, for example.

  3. Choose a change to a default workflow scheme.

  4. Click on the →A option next to the name.

  5. Enable the option "Do not match to default scheme" and enter a name in the dialog.

The matching target default scheme remains unchanged. Configuration Manager converts the default scheme from the snapshot to a new non-default scheme on the target Jira.

Audit Log

Configuration Manager captures and provides information in the Audit Log about all the modifications done by you during the deployment. You will be able to compare the configuration elements before and after the changes.
