Add labels to containers

Labels and containers

You can easily add as many labels as you like to a board container. These can help organize and search within the content.

A label is added to a new container when it is first named.

Boards bundled with Comala Boards have labels pre-populated for each container.

Any labels for a container are displayed when you mouse over each container when accessing the Design board in the board editor.

Renaming an existing board container does not change any existing container label(s) and does not add a new label to the container.

If the container requires a new label, this must be edited manually using the board editor.

On the published page container labels are only visible when viewing a card added to a container.

Cards and container labels

Cards added to a container will have the container label appended to cards when they are added.

Choose the card title to display the label.

Moving the card or card page to another container will remove any existing labels from the card and append the label(s) for the new container.

A linked Confluence card page has the same label(s) as the container containing the card page.

Moving a card page to another container on the board will update the label(s) appended to the linked page. The label appended from the previous container is removed.

Add a label to an existing container

Existing containers can have labels added or removed.

To add or edit a label for an existing container

  • Edit the Board macro on the draft page

  • select the container and then choose the 'Click to edit' button in the container

  • add the new label(s) to the container

  • labels can be added individually or as a comma-separated list

    • existing labels are displayed as a grey lozenge

    • remove a label by selecting the X in the label lozenge

Ensure the new label is displayed as a lozenge in the label entry box by adding and comma and pressing return or clicking in the container background.

  • choose Apply to save the labels to the container.

  • choose Save and Update the page

Any cards added prior to the addition of the second label are not displayed in the container.

The cards are still part of the board, but there is no container for their display as the board labels act as filters. Cards must have the same labels as the board to be displayed.
A new card added to the container is appended with both labels.

Editing container labels and the display of existing cards

Adding or removing a container label will mean any previously created cards are not displayed.

  • changing container labels does not update the labels for any existing cards or card pages previously displayed in the board container

  • a container with any change in its labels does not display any of the cards added prior to the new label

  • cards displayed in a board container are filtered based on the current labels for the container

If you wish to display the cards you can manage this in a number of ways:

Create a new board container with the original label(s).

This can be named differently but the label(s) must be the same as those on the cards you want to display.

The previous cards are displayed in the new container.

Move existing cards out of a container before changing the container labels

ln order to retain the display in a board container of previously added cards after the addition or removal of a container label

  • move any card or card page, temporarily out of the container in advance of adding the new label

  • add the new label to the empty container using the board editor

  • return the previous cards to the container after adding or removing labels

When the existing cards and page cards are returned to the original container, the new container labels are appended to each card and page card. The cards and page cards are then displayed.
