Set the SLA Goal as a Dynamic Duration

This page is about Time to SLA for Jira Cloud. Using Jira On-Prem? Click the On-Prem button above.

Dynamic Duration is a Jira custom field. When you enter a time string here, Time to SLA will set the SLA duration as the input entered in this field.

This allows users to enter different SLA goals for each issue. If you have changing SLA durations per issue, you can use this function to set SLA duration dynamically. The SLA clock will count according to this field.

Step 1: Create the custom field

To set an SLA Goal as a Dynamic Duration, you need to create a custom field that will store the SLA duration beforehand. This custom field will appear only in the screens you select while creating the custom field, regardless of whether you designate the SLA Goal as Dynamic Duration or not.

  1. Log in to your Jira Cloud instance.

  2. Click on the cog icon to see the Settings menu.

  3. Go to Issues under Jira Settings.

  4. Click Custom Field in the left column to see the Custom Fields menu.

  5. Click Create Custom Field, and a screen will pop up.

  6. Select Text field (single line).

  7. Create a Name for the duration field.

  8. Click Create.

  9. You’ll be redirected to the Associate field SLA Duration screen.

  10. Tick the screens on which you want the duration field to appear. Remember: The field will only be in the screens that you selected!

  11. Click Update.

Now, you can see the Duration Field in the Dynamic Duration drop-down menu whilst defining or updating an SLA.

Afterward, you can change your screen settings by going to the Custom Fields menu and clicking ... icon > Associate to Screens in the row of the Duration Field that you want the screens to be displayed on. On the Associate Field to Screens page, make the changes and click Update.

Step 2: Set the SLA Goal as a dynamic duration

  1. Go to the SLA Goals section.

  2. Click + Add goal.

  3. Fill out the goal requirements, and for Goal Target Type, select Dynamic Duration. The Field dropdown appears.

  4. Click the drop-down menu to see all of the possible date fields, and select one.
