Before migrating from Jira Server/Data Center to Jira Cloud

To perform migrations to the cloud, you need to install the Cloud Migration Tool on your Jira Server or Data Center instance and Configuration Manager on your Jira Cloud site.

In the future, the Configuration Manager for Jira Cloud app will handle your cloud-to-cloud migrations. But, for now, it allows you to successfully create connections between Jira Server/Data Center and Jira Cloud.

Supported Jira Cloud plans

You must have either the Standard, Enterprise, or Premium cloud plan. Trial or paid licenses of these three types are supported.

Migrations to Jira Cloud on the Free plan are not supportedLearn more

Prerequisites

  • Jira Server/Data Center needs to have Internet access. If your Jira Server/Data Center has limited access to the Internet, you must allow it to access our Cloud API and file storage.

  • You need to have Jira System Administrators permissions on Jira Server/Data Center and Jira Cloud.

  • You need to have Site or Organization admin permissions on the Jira Cloud site to create connections and perform migrations. This means that the user you use to create a connection to Jira Cloud must be added to the site-admins or org-admins group on the Jira Cloud site. Learn more about creating connections to Jira Cloud sites.
You can also learn more about the different admin roles in Atlassian’s documentation.

  • You need to install Cloud Migration Tool on your Jira Server/Data Center. Visit the installation instructions.

  • You need to install Configuration Manager for Jira Cloud on your Jira Cloud site. Visit the installation instructions.

  • You need to have an Atlassian API token for your Atlassian account. Learn more about why you need an API token and how to get one.

  • You need to have the 3rd party apps installed on your Jira Server/Data Center instance also installed on your Jira Cloud site.

App compatibility

Note that 3rd party apps, even if they are available for Cloud and Server/Data Center, will work differently in most cases. Please get in touch with the 3rd party app vendor regarding the migration procedure of the app data.
