Introduction

Milestones can be interpreted as:

  • Markers of reaching an identifiable stage in any task or project

  • Software release life cycle states

On the timeline, milestones are represented as diamond shapes. The milestone duration is zero days, so it is displayed always on a single day.

You can track project milestones using the Infobar section in the Gantt module in BigPicture PPM for monday.com. Just navigate to the selected milestone by clicking on the "Target" icon next to the milestone on the list.

Convert tasks to milestones

Convert a single task to a milestone

To convert a task (monday item, subitem) to a milestone or vice versa:

  1. Right-click on the task you wish to convert (on the task list).

  2. Choose “Convert to milestone”.

  3. Your task is converted to milestone and its start date equals its end date. You can convert it back at any moment, following the same process.

You can also use inline editing to convert a task into a milestone. In order to do that, add the “Milestone” column to your current column view and double-click on the empty field. Another way to convert a task to a milestone is to click three dots on the Editor Slider and select “Convert to milestone” from a menu that will appear.

You cannot convert a parent task to a milestone.

Start/end date recalculation

If the task duration is more than 1 day, its end date is set as the milestone start and end dates. The milestone duration is always zero days so the start date is the same as the end date. 

During the conversion, the end date is synchronized with the start date. The end date becomes the milestone position.

  • Changing the start date does NOT impact the end date. After refreshing the page, the start date is automatically set to the same date as the end date.

  • Changing the end date impacts the start date. After refreshing the page, the start date is automatically updated to be the same as the new end date. 

Convert multiple to milestones / tasks

Use the multi-select option to select a few tasks and milestones and right-click to "Convert to...":

  • Milestone

  • Task

When you select a milestone and a task and right-click "Convert to.. > Task":

  • A milestone is converted into a task

  • A task remains unchanged because it is already a task

Convert a task with one date to a milestone

When a task with one date (“Start Date” or “End Date”) is converted to a milestone, the “Start Date” becomes the same as the “End Date”.

Create a basic task as a milestone

  1. Click the + (plus icon) > Create task > Basic task.

  2. Fill in the task information.

  3. Activate the toggle switch.

Milestone overview - Infobar

You can display the list of milestones using Gantt's Infobar:

  • Only milestones expanded on the Gantt chart are visible on the list.

  • To see only milestones from selected parent tasks, expand those parent tasks and collapse parent tasks you are not interested in.

  • To see all the milestones in the box, expand all tasks by clicking "Expand all" on a tree root column header.
