Manual
Steps
Limitations
Only own and none scope boxes can be manually archived or restored.
Relevant sub-boxes are archived with the parent - archiving the parent automatically archives all its children.
Context box (a box you’re in) cannot be archived.
The root box (the home box of BigGantt) cannot be archived.
Automatic
Boxes can be automatically archived after a specified period of inactivity.
A Box is archived only if the whole cluster/branch hasn't been used for a period of time. For example, when nobody entered the "Own" scope Box for a certain time, but someone entered its sub-Boxes, the Box (and all its sub-boxes) are NOT automatically archived.
A Box is considered inactive if no user entered any of its modules within the last X days.
To define automatic archiving rules of boxes:
Open BigPicture.
Click the wrench button on the right side.
Select Modules.
Navigate to the Overview tab.
Element | Description |
---|---|
The toggle switch lets you activate/deactivate the functionality. The entire App is affected (all Boxes). | |
Define how long the period of inactivity needs to be to trigger auto-archiving. The default value is set to 30. |
Limitations
Closed boxes are NOT automatically archived. If one box in a cluster is closed, none of the boxes are archived.
Synchronization and scheduling of tasks
Action | The task is only in archived boxes (all boxes that contain the task are archived) | The task is in at least one active box |
---|---|---|
Synchronization | The task is NOT synchronized. | The task is synchronized. |
Scheduling | Scheduling block → The task period is NOT affected by the scheduling rules. | The task period adirajusts according to the scheduling rules. |

Archived box limitations
Archived boxes no longer have aggregate calculations performed and do NOT provide any relevant business data.
Tasks associated with only archived or closed boxes are scheduled as blocked.
Configuration and editing of attributes for archived boxes are NOT available, including disabling inline editing of column values.
Archived boxes have the Archived label in the Kanban mode.
Archived boxes are greyed out and marked with the Archived Box icon in the box switcher.
Closed Boxes are not automatically archived. If one box in a cluster is "closed" none of the Boxes can be archived, since they need to get archived simultaneously.
Both closed and archived boxes aren’t being recalculated → don’t impact performance. This is why closed boxes aren’t candidates for automatic archiving. They already don’t impact the app.
