KB : How to send SMS notifications using Twilio endpoint as a Canned Responses action

Purpose

This page describes the way how to set up a Canned Responses automatic action that allows sending SMS to a particular phone number as well as describes how to configure the Jira automation webhook and create a Twilio endpoint.

Runbook:

Sing up to Twilio in https://www.twilio.com/

Create an account and accept the Terms of Service and next verify your phone number:

Create the sender’s phone number. For test purposes, select the USA or Canada number.

To get phone numbers outside of the USA or Canada, you may need to meet regulatory requirements (requires account upgrade)

Check if the phone number has been assigned:

Create Jira automation triggered when an HTTP POST is sent to the webhook.

Add action and fulfill the Twilio account details: Account SID, Auth Token, Twilio phone number as well as the participants and message body.

In this tutorial “To” phone number is the same for all messages, but you can use smart-values to set the number based on an issue field's value or add multiple numbers separated by commas.

Save and publish Automation.

Next, go to the Canned responses template and create templates with webhook action.
