Planning Poker in Item view

Overview

Together with https://appfire.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/PT/pages/171213984, estimation from the Item view provides teams with the flexibility to choose their preferred way of estimation.

The estimation from the Item view, or what we call “Session-less estimation,” is recommended for:

  • quick ad-hoc estimates of a small number of items;

  • asynchronous estimations;

  • unmoderated estimates for a large number of items.

Adding Planning Poker item view

After installing Planning Poker app, you can add the item view to start estimating. Open item view of an item and click on the plus icon in the upper right part of the view. Locate Planning Poker in the list of Installed apps and click “Add to item”:

Now, you can start estimating! Consider adding the tab to favorites or even making it the default for the board.

Estimation process

In order to start estimation, every participant should navigate to a specific Item card, choose the Planing Poker tab, and provide their estimate:

This process might be done interactively or asynchronously. The team should agree on the process that fits them best.

When all the participants are done with their estimates (avatars appear in the participants list and the green checkbox is added), anyone can reveal personal estimates and save the final estimate.

If a consensus has not been reached, you can reset the personal estimates and estimate again:

Example of asynchronous estimation process

  1. The team member responsible for planning specifies the estimation scope (for example, an iteration, sprint, or scope of a filter).

    1. Usually, the person specifies a deadline for providing the estimates.

  2. Team members navigate to a board view with the specified items and open the item card of the first item at their convenience.

  3. Members provide estimates at their own pace:

    1. Select the first item in the list

    2. Select an estimate

    3. Click on Next to jump to the next item

    4. Repeat the estimation procedure.

  4. When the planning time comes, the team gets together. The moderator goes through each item discussing the results.

    1. If needed, estimates are reset and provided again to reach a consensus.

Example of interactive estimation process

  1. The team member responsible for planning specifies the estimation scope (for example, an iteration, sprint, or scope of a filter).

  2. Team members navigate to a board view with the specified items and open the item card of the first item.

  3. The team discusses item details.

  4. When there are no questions and the item is considered complete, members provide estimates simultaneously by selecting a card with the proper estimate.

  5. The moderator reveals cards and saved the final estimate.

    1. If needed, estimates are reset and provided again to reach a consensus.

Configuration

The estimation column and the deck cards are specified per board in the Planning Poker settings:

By default, the first numeric or text column on the board is selected.

note You can use “label=value” to hide the final estimate behind the label:
