Opening CSV files in Microsoft Excel

This guide explains how to open CSV (Comma-Separated Values) files in Microsoft Excel while preserving the formatting of your data, especially dates and numbers. Following these steps ensures your information remains accurate and usable within Excel.

Instructions

For Windows users

Step 1: Open Your CSV File

Locate and open your downloaded CSV file by double-clicking on it or using the Open option in Excel.

Step 2: Format Date Fields

Check if your date fields' format matches your Jira date or date-time format.

You can check your Jira date and date-time format in Import Assets from CSV page or General Configuration page.

If the date fields in your CSV file do not match your Jira date or date-time format:

  1. Right-click the column with the date.

  2. Select Format Cells.

  1. Under Category, choose Custom.

  2. Type your date or date-time format according to your attribute type.

  3. Click OK.

Step 3: Adjust Number Fields

If the Number fields are incorrect:

  1. Right-click the column with the number.

  2. Select Format Cells.

 

  1. Click Custom and pick 0.

  2. Click OK.

This will fix the CSV file:

For macOS users

Step 1: Start with a New Workbook

  1. Open Microsoft Excel and create a new blank workbook.

Step 2: Import CSV File

  1. Click on cell A1 to select it.

  2. Navigate to Data > From Text/CSV.

Step 3: Configure Import Settings

  1. Browse to locate your CSV file and click Get Data.

  2. In the Text Import Wizard, set File Origin to Delimited and Unicode UTF-8.

  3. Click Next.

  4. Choose Comma as your delimiter and click Next.

  5. On the bottom table, select all columns, click Text, and then click Finish.

  6. Click OK.

This will fix the CSV file:
