How to close an objective
Closing an objective gives you a chance to review the work done, look at the progress, and finally, grade the objectives. By grading the objectives, you declare if you’ve achieved the goal and if not- how far you were from achieving it.
In OKRs for Jira, you can close all sub-objectives and their KRs when closing the higher-level objective, so it may be a good idea to start closing your OKRs from the top one.
Open the page of an objective you’d like to close.
Click on the three-dots menu located on the right side of the screen and choose “Close”.
You will see this window:
Choose the final status of the objective. You can choose from 5 statuses available when closing an OKR: Success, Incomplete, Failed, Cancelled, Rescheduled. The chosen status will be also applied to all open sub-objectives and KRs. To set a different final status for the sub-items of the objective, you need to close them earlier.Write a short description of how did the work on the objective go and what is the reason for choosing a particular status.
This description will be applied to this objective only. You can edit the descriptions of final updates for all of the sub-objectives and KRs after you close the objective.Grade the objective and its sub-items
Grading happens on a 0-1 scale, where you assess how well did the work go. Typically it’s 0 for nothing done at all, 0.3- 0.5 for something small achieved, 0.6-0.9 for almost reaching the target value, and 1 for completing the goal. We suggest the grade based on the progress, but as you may have a scale of your own, the value can be changed.
