Enabling estimation for bugs (DC)

The Story Points field is the default estimation field in Jira Software. It's configured out of the box for issues of type Story or Epic, but not for Bugs.

If you want to estimate bugs, you have to add the field Story points (or a custom field you use for estimation) to the Jira view issue screen for this issue type. In order to do that, follow these steps:

Method 1: Quick enablement

  1. Join an estimation session in your Jira Software backlog view.

  2. Click on a Bug issue.

  3. Click the How to enable this field? link. A popup appears.

  4. Click the Enable button.

It will now be possible to estimate issues of this issue type.

Method 2: Manual configuration

If you prefer more control over your issue view, you can manually add the Story points field:

  1. Navigate to Jira Administration > Issues > Custom Fields.

  2. Locate the Story points field, click the cog icon, and select Configure.

  3. Find Default Configuration Scheme for Story Points and click Edit Configuration.

  4. Under Choose applicable issue types, select the Bug issue type.
