Before you generate a dump file, upgrade the App (to version 8.2.2 or higher).

Steps overview

The steps below describe how to migrate from Jira Server/Data Center to Jira Cloud using Jira XML + BigPicture/BigGantt snapshot.

Before you proceed, please read the following instructions carefully and copy all the steps to a clipboard to keep them at hand. Make sure to complete each step:

  1. Create a backup of the App data.

  2. Create a backup of your Jira environment.

  3. Restore Jira data on a new cloud environment.

  4. Install the App on the cloud environment.

  5. Restore the App backup on Jira Cloud.

Step 1 - Create a BigPicture/BigGantt backup

Jira Data Center

When you migrate from Jira Data Center to Jira Cloud, you will be asked to reinstall BigPicture to prepare a dump.

In this part, you need to create a BigPicture/BigGantt backup of your server/data center instance and download it:

  1. Go to BigPicture/BigGantt App configuration > Advanced > Database dumps.

  2. Click the New dump button.

  3. Add a description.

  4. To confirm, click the Create dump button.

You will be able to track the progress:

  5. The new database dump should appear at the top of the list of backups.

  6. Press the Download button to save the backup file to the disk (if you don't see the item on the list, refresh the page).

Step 2 - Create a Jira XML backup and download it

Don't use the Atlassian JCMA tool.

In this part, you need to create a Jira backup and import it:

  1. Go to System > Backup system.

  2. To create, click Backup.

Step 3 - Restore the Jira backup on the cloud environment

In this part, you need to restore the Jira backup on the cloud environment:

  1. Go to System > Restore System.

  2. Click Import data.

  6. Confirm the operation by entering the word RESTORE.

  7. Click the Restore button.
    Important!
If the BigPicture instance is not new and some work has already been done on it, this work will be overwritten! BigPicture will automatically dump its current state before restoring it (so the process can be reversed).

  8. Map the users from Jira Server/Data Center to the users on Jira Cloud.

During server/data center to cloud migration, automatic user assignment will be performed (the matching is based on the users' email addresses). There may be a situation where not all users on the server/data center side will be matched to the users on the cloud side. In this case, manually assign users that were not mapped in the automated process (if there are too few users on the Jira Cloud side, they need to be created before the restore operation):

(info) Info: If there are many unmatched users (more than 20-30), it may mean that the data from Jira was not migrated correctly. In this case, verify that the user data has been migrated.

  9. The database recovery process will start.

  10. After the recovery process, the migration from one instance to another is over.

  11. You can then go to BigPicture and verify the data's correctness.

Additional information

Any integration instances after the restore operation will be in a “not operational” state.
This mechanism prevents a situation where two applications make changes in the same integration instance simultaneously.

To activate selected integrations:

  1. Go to App Configuration > Integrations > Connections.

  2. Move the switch in the Active column.
