Adding the estimation field to the custom issue type
For example, the Story Points field is not available by default for the Bug issue type. To enable the Story Points field for different issue types, follow these steps:
Navigate to the Jira top menu, and click Projects > View all projects.
Find the project you want to work with and click the three dots icon next to it. Then, select Project settings.
From the sidebar, click Fields, and then Actions > Edit Fields.
From the sidebar, click Custom fields. Find Story Points in the list and click the three dots icon to select Contexts and default value.
Change the context of the field to include other issue types by clicking Edit Configuration.
Select the applicable issue types by pressing Command/Control.
Click Modify to save the changes. That’s it!
You may need to add Story Points field to relevant screens. If that doesn’t work, Story Points may be hidden because of field configurations.
Configuring the “Original estimate” time field
To estimate a time field like the Original estimate, you need to perform a similar configuration as mentioned earlier. However, there is an additional step required, which is adding Time Tracking to the Issue screens.
Unlike other fields, the Original Estimate is part of a larger group of Time Tracking fields and may not be visible in the list by default. Although you can see and edit the Original Estimate in the issue details, it may not be available for Agile Poker for Jira Cloud if Time Tracking is missing from the relevant screens.
To add Time Tracking to a screen, follow these steps:
Navigate to Jira settings > Issues > Screens.
Select the relevant screen, and click the three dots icon > Configure.
Add Time tracking to the list, and that’s it!
Alternatively, you can open the issue details for the specific issue you want to estimate, click Configure from the bottom right, and access the corresponding screen mentioned on the Issue layout page.
Managing field visibility
For Scrum boards, the field can be defined in the board configuration. For Kanban boards, you can define the estimation field in the session configurations.
Managing field visibility in Jira can be complex, so we recommend using the Field Helper tool for assistance. Follow these steps:
Open the problematic issue.
Click the three dots icon, and on the Edit issue screen, click Find your field.
Type the field name, and the tool will provide insights into why the field is not visible.
By following these instructions, you can effectively configure the Original Estimate time field and manage field visibility in Jira, ensuring a smooth estimation process with Agile Poker.
