Service projects and their usage

Power Admin for Jira allows you to easily view and track the usage of configuration elements across your Jira Service Management (JSM) projects. These projects are referred to as Service Projects in the app’s UI.

Service projects cannot be managed and edited through their profile pages, unlike other elements in Power Admin. That capability is available through the Project configuration element type.

The Service Project object provides a representation of your JSM project configurations (i.e. request types, queues, SLAs, and legacy automation) and their interactions with other objects.

Some of the other configuration elements have a Service Projects counter in the Summary section of their profile pages. You can see a list of these elements in the Usage section of this document. This counter shows the number of service project configurations that use that element.

Service Projects’ Cached Index

We use a cached index to analyze the configuration elements’ usage in service projects, which is generated daily. To view the latest usage information, you can generate the index manually. Simply click on the clock icon next to the service projects in the Summary section of a configuration element and select Refresh Index to perform the analysis (or Generate Index if this is your first time). Generating the analysis can take some time, especially if you have a lot of service project data in Jira.

Keep in mind that the cached index provides a snapshot of your service project usage at a specific point in time. Changes made after the index is generated will not be reflected until the next index is created.

Find Jira Service Management projects

Service projects are listed as a separate configuration element type on the Power Admin landing page. This makes it easier for you to search and find detailed usage information and analysis of their dependencies.

You can also search for service projects through the Projects configuration element. Just filter the search results by type and from the drop-down menu select Service.

To see a list of all your Jira Service Management projects:

  1. Go to the Power Admin’s Landing page.

  2. Click the drop-down menu and select Service Project. You can also search for a specific project by typing its name or project key in the search bar.

  3. Click the magnifying glass icon to start searching.

  4. You’ll be taken to a new page that shows the search results. Here, you’ll see a list of all your JSM projects along with their IDs.

  5. If you want to see more information about a specific project, just click on its name to open its profile page.

Usage of Jira configuration elements in your service projects

Power Admin for Jira includes service projects in the usage summary of other Jira configuration elements in the form of usage counters. Through them, you can easily see how many service projects are using a specific configuration element. The usage counters will give you valuable insight into how your service projects are interconnected.

You will find the Service Projects usage counters in the Summary sections of the following Jira configuration elements:

  • custom field,

  • issue type,

  • priority,

  • resolution,

  • status,

  • project,

  • group,

  • app.
