Project import is failing with an error “Data import failed with exception: empty String“

 Problem

Project import fails with an error “Data import failed with exception: empty String“ during migration using the Project Configurator for Jira app.

Error log details:

Data import for project with key: XXXXX Data import failed with exception: empty String java.lang.NumberFormatException: empty String at sun.misc.FloatingDecimal.readJavaFormatString(FloatingDecimal.java:1842) at sun.misc.FloatingDecimal.parseDouble(FloatingDecimal.java:110) at java.lang.Double.parseDouble(Double.java:538) at java.lang.Double.<init>(Double.java:608)

 Solution

To troubleshoot the above error, the following select statement shall be used:

select * from changeitem ci inner join changegroup cg on ci.groupid = cg.id inner join jiraissue ji1 on cg.issueid = ji1.id inner join project p on ji1.project = p.id where p.pkey = '<project key>'

  • Using this select statement gives the results of the table, changeitem, that are filtered for a specific project i.e., for the project for which the import is failing.

  • If the above statement gives rows that have empty string values for NEWSTRING or NEWVALUE column on the source Jira instance, replace the empty values with NULL as per the Atlassian bug:

It is a best practice to perform database updates only after taking the database backup.
