Rich Filters gadgets not rendering in Confluence Cloud after migration

Rich Filters gadgets not rendering in Confluence Cloud after migration

Summary

After migrating from Confluence Data Center to Confluence Cloud, embedded Rich Filters gadgets may fail to render, displaying errors such as "Error rendering macro 'gadget'" or "unknown macro." This occurs because Rich Filters: Reports and Charts for Confluence is currently only available for Data Center, and there is no automatic migration path to Confluence Cloud. This article provides a workaround using Atlassian’s Smart Links to embed Jira Cloud dashboards.

Use case: migrating Rich Filters gadgets from Confluence DC to Cloud

Problem

When Confluence pages containing Rich Filters gadgets are migrated from Data Center to Cloud:

  • The gadgets do not render.

  • Error message: Error rendering macro 'gadget': The gadget was not added to this Confluence instance yet.

  • The macros may still reference legacy Jira Data Center URLs.

  • The "unknown macro" placeholder may appear on migrated pages.

Cause

  • Product availability: The app Rich Filters: Reports and Charts for Confluence is a Data Center-only product. There is no equivalent Cloud version of this specific Confluence app.

  • Migration limitation: Because there is no Cloud version of the app, the Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant (CCMA) cannot map or migrate these macros to a functional Cloud equivalent.

Solution or workaround

While the specific Confluence macros cannot be migrated, you can achieve the same result by embedding Jira Cloud dashboards (which support Rich Filters for Jira Dashboards Cloud) directly into Confluence Cloud pages using Smart Links.

Steps to restore visibility

  1. Prepare the dashboard in Jira Cloud:

    • Navigate to your Jira Cloud instance.

    • Create or open a Jira dashboard containing the desired Rich Filter gadgets.

  2. Copy the link:

    • To embed the entire dashboard: Copy the URL of the dashboard from your browser’s address bar.

    • To embed a specific gadget: Click the chain icon (Copy link) at the top right of the specific gadget on the Jira dashboard.

  3. Embed in Confluence Cloud:

    • Open the migrated Confluence Cloud page in edit mode.

    • Paste the copied link directly onto the page.

    • Confluence will automatically convert the link into a Smart Link embed, rendering the Jira dashboard or gadget within the page.
