How to report on issues created in a month and unresolved by month-end using Rich Filters

This article explains how to create a report in Rich Filters for Jira Dashboards that tracks the number of issues created in a specific month that remained unresolved at the end of that same month, visualized over a 12-month period.

Summary

Standard time series gadgets often show the current state of unresolved issues or a cumulative trend. However, some reporting requirements demand a "snapshot" view of a specific month's performance—specifically, how many tickets created in Month X were not resolved by the end of Month X.

This article covers two methods to achieve this:

  1. Smart Filter Breakdown (Recommended): Using a Rich Filter Flexi Chart to visualize the backlog size for each specific month.

  2. Two-Dimensional Statistics: Using a Rich Filter Two-Dimensional Statistics gadget for a tabular view of unresolved issues per month.

Use case 1: visualizing a 12-month trend of unresolved issues per month

Problem

A customer needs to see a time series chart showing the number of issues created in each of the last 12 months that were either resolved in a subsequent month or are still currently unresolved.

Solution

To achieve this, you must create a Smart Filter with individual clauses for each month and then display them using the Rich Filter Flexi Chart gadget.

Step 1: Create a Smart Filter

  1. Go to your Rich Filter Configuration > Smart Filters.

  2. Create a new Smart Filter (for example, "Unresolved at Month End").

  3. Add a Smart Clause for each month you wish to track (for example, the last 12 months).

  4. Use the following JQL logic for each clause, adjusting the dates for each specific month:
ex: created >= 2023-01-01 AND created <= 2025-01-31 AND (resolution IS EMPTY OR resolved >= 2025-02-01)

Step 2: Configure the Flexi Chart Gadget

  1. Add the Rich Filter Flexi Chart gadget to your dashboard.

  2. Select your Rich Filter.

  3. Set Chart Type to 1D -> Line (or Bar if preferred).

  4. Set Breakdown by Statistic Type to the Smart Filter you created in Step 1.

  5. Set Value to Issue Count.

Use case 2: tabular view of unresolved issues

Problem

You prefer a table format to see the exact count of issues created in a specific month that missed your month-end resolution target.

Solution

Use the same Smart Filter logic from Use Case 1 but apply it to a statistics gadget.

  1. Add the Rich Filter Two-Dimensional Statistics gadget to your dashboard.

  2. Select your Rich Filter.

  3. For the Vertical or Horizontal axis, select the Smart Filter (for example, "Unresolved at Month End") containing your monthly JQL clauses.

  4. The gadget now displays a row/column for each month, showing the count of issues that met the "unresolved at month-end" criteria.
