How to add a custom computed time series in Rich Filters for Jira Dashboards

Summary

This article explains how to create a custom time series to track specific events, such as escalated tickets, using JQL and the updated series in Rich Filters for Jira Dashboards. By default, the app provides a few standard options, but users can define their own logic for custom reporting needs.

Use case

A user wants to display the number of tickets that transitioned to a specific status (for example, Escalated) on a particular day in a time series chart.

Solution

To track custom events like status transitions over time, use the Updated series type combined with a specific JQL query that targets the change event.

Step 1: Create a custom time series

  1. In the Rich filter configuration page, click Time Series.

  2. Click Add new series.

  3. In the Name field, enter a descriptive name (for example, Escalated tickets today).

  4. In the Series type dropdown, select Updated.

  5. In the JQL field, enter the following query:

status changed to "Escalated" during (startOfDay(), endOfDay())
  1. Click Create.

Step 2: Display the time series on a dashboard

  1. Navigate to your Jira dashboard.

  2. In the Rich Filter Time Series Chart gadget, click Edit.

  3. In the Time series field, select the newly created series (for example, Escalated tickets today).

  4. Click Save. The chart updates to show the frequency of the specified event over time.
