HOWTO: Fix the missing Toggle button and Space-Level Numbering in the Numbered Headings App

The following functionality may not be available in the Numbered Headings app within Confluence post updating the app:

  • The toggle button for enabling or disabling numbered headings does not appear in the page editor.

  • Unable to enable the space-level numbering configuration option from the space settings.

The issue typically occurs when the REST Services module of the Numbered Headings app is disabled. The REST Services module is required for rendering the UI elements, such as the toggle button and space-level configuration.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, follow these steps to enable the REST Services module for the Numbered Headings app:

Step 1: Access the Manage Apps Section

  1. Navigate to Confluence Administration.

  2. Click Manage Apps.

Step 2: Locate the Numbered Headings App

  1. In the list of apps, search for Numbered Headings.

  2. Click the dropdown arrow to expand the app details.

Step 3: Enable App Modules

  1. Click Modules.

  2. Search for a module labeled something similar to “REST Services”.

  3. If this module is disabled, click Enable.

Step 4: Verify the Fix

  1. Open a Confluence page in edit mode – the Numbered Headings toggle button should now be visible.

  2. Go to Space Settings > Numbered Headings – the space-level configuration options should function without errors.
