Strategic Areas
Strategic Areas (old navigation)
What are Strategic Areas?
Strategic Areas (SA) are a key component of strategic portfolio management. They act as a centralized hub that connects strategy and delivery. Strategic Areas provide unified single-views that display rich data related to the company’s strategic goals, where you can:
See your short and long-term goals at a glance.
Track how the initiatives that support those goals are progressing.
Track how investments align with those goals.
Strategic Areas provide a concise, high-level summary of the most critical data a leadership team in your organization might need. They aggregate relevant information and data across the app and present it on one dashboard.
See an overview video below.
Permissions
SA respects OKR permissions, which means users will not see OKRs that they don’t have access to.
To access the SA's overview, the user must have viewer permission to the root (Main) box.
Financials are visible only if the user has App Financial Admin or App Financial Viewer.
Define Strategic Area
Strategic Areas are built around Strategic themes (STs) - high-level goals that define your organization’s key priorities.
To use Strategic Areas, the OKR module must be enabled with the following goal hierarchy:
Strategic theme → Objective → Key result.
Therefore, to create a Strategic Area, you need to:
Create a Strategic theme (recommended for long-term goals, for example, 3-5 years)
Set Objectives and Key Results (recommended for short-term goals, for example, 3-12 months)
Link your initiatives or projects - represented by BigPicture boxes - to your Key Result.*
Configure financial data for the linked initiatives*
The Strategic Area then displays all data tied to the Strategic theme: OKRs and Initiatives.
Note *You can link initiatives and configure financials later. Until then, only OKRs will be shown on the dashboard.
Strategic Areas are visible only for Strategic themes with at least one child OKR. STs without any OKR children will not be displayed on the Strategic Areas Overview.
Navigate to Strategic Areas
Go to the Strategic Areas Overview. You can access it on the:
a. Home page:
b. OKR module main menu:
i. Click Strategic Areas on the left-hand side of the OKR main menu.
c. Context menu:
i. Open a context menu for a Strategic theme, its sub-theme, or any Objective that belongs to that ST.
ii. Select Strategic Area from a dropdown.
i. Open the OKR details side panel for a Strategic theme, its sub-theme, or any Objective that belongs to that ST.
ii. Click More actions (…) and select Strategic Area from a dropdown.
e. OKR details page:
i. Open the details page for a Strategic theme, sub-theme, or sub-objective that belongs to that Strategic theme.
ii. Click the Strategic Area link at the top of the page.
The Strategic Areas Overview is displayed. If several Strategic themes have been created in your organization, they will appear on the list.
Select the Strategic theme you want to open a Strategic Area for:
Click the Strategic theme from the list.
Or, use the Strategic Areas switcher to navigate to the SA you want.
The Strategic Areas switcher looks and works like the box switcher. However, Strategic Areas are not boxes. For the same reason, switching directly from a Strategic Area to any module is impossible.
Strategic Area Overview
The Strategic Area Overview displays the Strategic themes created in all boxes in your organization (STs without at least one OKR child are not displayed).
Strategic Areas
Since a Strategic Area is a collection of data related to a given Strategic theme, that data is divided into two tabs:
OKRs
Initiatives
The Strategic Area is readonly. If you want to make any changes in your budget or OKRs, go to the Financials and OKR modules, respectively.
OKRs must be added to the Strategic theme to see it listed in the Strategic Areas Overview.
If no boxes are linked to any KR under a Strategic theme, you will see a splash screen on the Initiatives tab asking you to go back to the OKR module to link relevant boxes.
If the financial data is not configured for any of the linked boxes, you will not see any data on the Initiatives tab.
OKRs
The OKRs tab shows the entire OKR hierarchy connected to the selected Strategic theme, but without the linked issues and linked boxes.
A The left pane visualizes the Strategic themes and OKRs by status.
B The central pane displays the Strategic theme and its entire hierarchy of sub-themes and OKRs.
The headings at the top show a total number of OKRs associated with a Strategic theme (including the Strategic theme alone).
All OKRs are divided by status, which you can update for each OKR in the OKR module.
The heading highlighted in blue indicates that the OKRs with a given status are displayed. Click the heading to show/hide the OKRs with a specific status.
Click the OKR key link to open its details page.
Initiatives
The Initiatives tab shows aggregated financial data from the boxes you linked to the KRs that belong to a selected Strategic theme.
A The top-left pane shows budget, total cost, actual cost, and the remaining cost for all linked boxes.
B The bottom-left pane visualizes the cost distribution by initiatives (boxes) for all linked boxes.
C The central pane displays a list of all linked boxes.
The headings at the top show the total number of boxes, broken down by progress status.
The heading highlighted in blue indicates that the box with a given status is displayed. Click the heading to show/hide the boxes with a specific status.
Key Results (KRs) associated with the linked boxes are listed on the right. Click the KR key link to open its details page.
Filter Strategic Areas
Once you are inside Strategic Areas for a selected Strategic theme, you can narrow down the visible data by the two filters:
Period
OKR Owner
Strategic Areas filters do not affect the Initiatives tab directly. They filter data on the OKRs tab only, so the data on the Initiative tab depends on which OKRs are visible (per period, per owner, or both).
In the example below, only one Key Result matches the period in the Period filter (the remaining OKRs are faded). Since this KR has no boxes linked to it, there is no data to show on the Initiatives tab.
