Clone issue with the parent field of the parent issue

Clone issue with the parent field of the parent issue

This page details how to clone an issue with the parent field of the parent issue.

With this feature, you can modify the parent hierarchy. You can set the cloned issue to inherit the grandparent of the original issue (that is, the parent field of the parent issue). For example, a user story is being cloned as an epic issue type.

Prerequisite

When creating a clone operation, ensure your Jira administrator has set the Parent field to the Parent issue’s parent on the Properties page. For more details, refer to the Clone Plus for Jira configuration - Cloud page.

Steps

  1. Select a parent issue whose child issue you want to clone in your Jira instance. For example, consider a parent issue as a child issue and the Parent field as shown in the following image.

  2. Select the child issue to clone. You can observe the Parent field of the child issue in the following image. In this example, the cloned issue will inherit the grandparent of the original issue (that is, the parent field of the parent issue)

  3. In the top-right corner, select the three dotsClone Plus option or the Clone Plus icon quick-add button for any issue.

  4. On the Clone Plus for Jira page, do the following:

    1. In the Clone operation field, select the clone operation for which the Parent field is set to the Parent issue’s parent.

    2. In the Project field, select the required project to which you want to clone the issues.

    3. In the Issue type field, select the issue type that is the same as the parent issue.

    4. In the Clone options section, click the required clone option.

  5. Click Clone.

  6. On the Create issue page, select values for all the issue fields as required.

  7. Click Create.
Jira displays a successful issue creation message, and the issue is cloned with the Parent field of the parent issue.

  • If the Parent field is blank for the parent issue, the Parent field won’t be cloned.

  • If the Parent field on the Properties page mentioned in the prerequisite is not set to the Parent issue’s parent, the Parent field won’t be cloned.

  • This feature is not supported for sub-task issue types, as this issue type cannot be cloned to different issue types.
