Page numbering helps you to number all headings on a page. It is the easiest and least obtrusive way to number your headings.

Using page numbering

Page numbering can be toggled on/off from the Confluence editor toolbar.

When you edit a Confluence page, you can see the Numbered headings button next to the heading selector.

If collaborative editing of pages is allowed, the Numbered headings button is enabled for use in new pages. Otherwise, users must save the page first before the button can be enabled.

When you click the button, all headings on the page gets numbered.

Configuration

You can use a different numbering format or provide your own format instead of using the default numbering format. Open the numbering configuration from the toolbar to change the configuration of the numbering.

More information about the options in the configuration can be found under Formatting options.

We discourage combining macro numbering and page numbering on the same page to prevent confusion, especially when using advanced configuration.
