In this section, you can set the default configuration of the Business Value fields. When enabled, the Planned and Actual Business Value fields appear next to the Objectives defined in the Roadmap module.

The Business value should not be confused with any other measures, such as the associated effort or total story points associated with an objective. The field values range from 0 to 10 and aren't synchronized with Jira.

The Planned Business Value (PBV) of new objectives scored during the planning meeting can be later compared with the Actual Business Value (ABV), once data is available. This is usually done during the "Inspect and adapt" ceremonies.

The PBV vs ABV ratio can be calculated for each team's objectives and Main objectives and it rolls up to the Team and timebox level.

Keep in mind:

  • A “Box type” contains the default settings applicable to multiple Boxes (all Boxes of a given type). Those settings are adjusted in box type administration.
  • Box configuration refers to the settings of a single, individual Box. They are dependent on the “Box type” settings.

Changing the configuration might disable (hide) settings or features in the Box Configuration (of an individual Box) and within different modules.

Also, as modules can be renamed or deactivated, the module name in the side menu might change or not be shown at all.

Displaying the Business Value fields

Changes to the default Business Value configuration apply to all existing Boxes of a given type (both existing and to newly created).

Main objectives

Enable the Business Value for Main objectives, so the Box editors can enter the BV score for each timebox:

In the example below the Roadmap module was renamed to "Objectives".

For example, the Program Increment Timebox has one Main objective - "Reduce the number of incidents by 70% so the customers experience less frustration" with Planned Business Value score 10 and Actual Business Value score 10 as well:

Team objectives

Enable the Business Value for Team objectives, so the Box editors can enter the BV score for each Team in the timebox:

In the example below the Roadmap module was renamed to "Objectives".

For example, the Team Developers in the Program Increment timebox has one objective - 'Reduce the number of incidents by 50% so the teams have more time for innovation' with a Planned Business Value score 10 and an Actual Business Value score 10 as well:

Associated work

You can associate tasks with objectives. Those tasks are listed as initiatives under a particular main or team objective.

Use of associated work items can be enabled/disabled for a Box type using a toggle switch in Administration> Box types > Settings of a Box type > Roadmap > Basics.

Settings are adjusted for all Boxes of a given type (not for individual Boxes).

  • When disabled, the associated work data is still stored in the database. Data isn't lost and can be restored by re-enabling the option.
  • By default, associated work is enabled in all Box types.

Security and access
