Get started

Language Switch operates on 2 two concepts:

  • The Switch buttons that will display all versions of a page or a space you have created and would like to manage. 
  • The Language Switch wizard (v3) or Confluence labels or page tags you attach to each page or space version that indicate both the relationship and difference differences amongst areas.

Label definition

The Language Switch is using Confluence labels to identify the language of the page and the related pages in other languages.

The pattern has the following format:

<Prefix>_<PageIdentifier>_<Language>
<Prefix>The prefix is always page
<PageIdentifier>This is the common identifier which must be used on all related pages, e.g. product.<Language>Identifies the Language of the Page using ISO 639-1 two-letter codes, as defined in the Configuration.

Perform the following steps to create two related Pages with two different configured Languages:

  1. Set Default Global Space Configuration: To configure go to General configuration > Language Switch. For more information, see Configuration.

       2. Set Default Configuration in Space Level: To configure go to Space Tools > Look and Feel > Language Switch. For more information, see Configuration.

Configure Pages for the Language Switch

Language Switch offers two methods for creating language pages:

  • To simplify and streamline the corresponding language pages, use the Language Switch wizard, which was introduced in Version 3.0.
  • Using Page Labels: This is the traditional method for linking the corresponding language to the page. This gives you complete control over the label naming.


Configure Pages Using Language Switch Wizard (v3)

Perform the following to configure pages using Language Switch wizard:

  1. Create the new page in the English Space or you can choose existing page.

      2. Click …> Language Switch. The Corresponding Language Pages window is displayed.

      3. Click + icon and specify the Location of the draft page.

      4. Click the Create button. A new draft page is created and opened automatically.


Using page Labels

Perform the following to create label:

  1. Create a new page or to add label(s) to existing page go to Edit mode.

      3. Type the name that you want to label the page.

      4. (Optional) Click Add to add another label.

      5. Click Close.

For example:

To identify the pages with different language (English en, German de) with the name of the page as Products. The label can be specified as follows:

  • With Page Identifier products, add a Label page_products_en to mark this page as English.
  • With Page Identifier products, add a Label page_products_de to mark this page as language German.
